Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following an assault on Saturday morning at the base of the Wrekin commonly known to locals as the ‘Cuckoos Pit'.

Walker assaulted by cyclist on The Wrekin

A male walker in his 60s was passed by a man on a mountain bike at around 7.55am who nearly collided with him. When the walker told the cyclist to use his bell, the offender stopped, got off his mountain bike and pulled the walker's trekking pole off him, snapped it in half and then hit him with it several times.

The walker suffered heavy bruising to his lower legs, ankles and shoulders, as well as a three inch wound on the back of his right leg which required stitches.

The offender is described as a white man, aged between 50-60, of average build, approximately 5ft 7 to 5ft 9 tall, wearing basic style prescription glasses, he is described as having a ‘weathered' look about him. He was wearing a red tight Lycra top and black Lycra trousers.

PC Gareth Bee, from Wellington police station, said: "We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this attack or has information for us about who may be responsible. Please call 0300 333 3000."
