Warning of delays when Watling Street resurfacing begins

Roads across the borough are being improved thanks to a major investment programme from Telford and Wrekin Council.

The next phase of work will see the resurfacing of the Watling Street junction with Mill Bank and Dawley Road in Wellington with works beginning on 22 August. Work is expected to last for two weeks and will involve a complete resurface of the junction area. The work has been planned in order to minimise any disruption but delays will be unavoidable due to the resurfacing taking place around the junction which is well used.

During this time both Mill Bank and Dawley Road will be closed at the junction with Watling Street which many people will know as the Cock Hotel junction. Watling Street will remain open for through traffic but the existing traffic lights will be replaced by temporary signals until the resurfacing is complete.

Access to businesses and properties will be maintained.

Diversions will be in place for a number of bus routes which will be affected by the work, however services will still operate. Bus routes affected are the 44, 55, 66 and 81 services.

Cllr Hilda Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport & Community Protection said: “Watling Street is another example of the work we are doing to improve roads across the borough. Telford & Wrekin Council has identified the state of Telford’s roads as a major priority and is investing significantly to improve carriageways.”

“I appreciate that road closures are not popular and may cause some inconvenience however I hope residents will understand that they are necessary to allow us to complete maintenance work on the borough’s roads.”

In the recent 100 day budget review by the new administration, an extra £1.5m was identified to improve roads.

Residents and businesses likely to be affected by the forthcoming works will be receiving information in order that they are fully aware of the plans in the coming days.

Advisory diversions will be in place during the works, to encourage traffic to use alternative routes to help minimise disruption near where the works are taking place. These diversions will be signposted on route and will also be available to view in the Transport and Streets pages of the Council’s website, www.telford.gov.uk from the 18th of August.

More information on these works is available by contacting Highways Customer Services on 01952 384000 or fax number 01952 384835 or by email at highways@telford.gov.uk

Further information on the bus route changes during this time will also be available on the Council’s website and available at bus stops along the route.
