Students from Wrekin College have joined forces with RAF Shawbury and Wolverhampton Wanderers by delivering football shirts to Malawi through the Shawbury based RAF Taking Football to Africa and Beyond Appeal.

Wrekin college students delivery shirts to Malawi

The students recently travelled to Malawi as part of their links through the Medic Malawi charity. Whist in Malawi they delivered Wolverhampton Wanderers football shirts donated by the clubs fans through a shirts amnesty to collect items for the charity.

Wrekin College pupil Jasmine Oakley went on the Malawi trip. Jasmine raised over £400 by walking a half marathon with her mum (Telford to Shrewsbury), by selling cakes and organising a raffle for a giant Easter egg. The shirts were presented to and worn by the Orphans in a football match against the Wrekin College pupils and staff, the shirts obviously had the right effect as the Orphans won 2-1! Jasmine helped out with various tasks such as painting the church, teaching, playing netball and generally assisting at the Orphanage. She starts A Levels at Wrekin in September but is going to continue raising money for the charity and hopes to return to Malawi one day in the future.

The RAF charity appeal has also just started the journey of football kits and items for the Ellesmere based Kenyan Schools Project. The project is run by Bill and Lynn Morris in the Mombasa area of the country and assist in schools and orphanages. The vital items will hopefully arrive in Kenya in time for Bill and Lynn’s arrival in October.

The appeal continues to gather pace with many deliveries over the past few weeks from the RAF Football Association, Sheffield and Hallamshire FA, Stockton FC, Doncaster and Abbeydale Grange School.
