Telford & Wrekin Council is backing a campaign to help boost trade in Wellington town centre this weekend to support local shopkeepers, licensees and stallholders at the town market.

Telford & Wrekin Council backs “Shop in Wellington” campaign

Members of the public are being urged to go shopping in Wellington on Saturday to help traders who were inconvenienced by demonstrations that took place in the town last weekend.

Most businesses in Wellington closed for the day as a security precaution when the English Defence League held a protest demonstration.

Council leader Kuldip Sahota said today that he would be going shopping in the town with his family on Saturday and urged local residents to do likewise.

“The Wellington that everyone wants to see is a bustling, thriving market town with lots of shoppers spending money to help boost local trade and I will be out with my family supporting town traders on Saturday,” said Councillor Sahota.

“Wellington residents and traders showed resilience and courage during a difficult time last weekend and I would urge as many people as possible to join me in spending a pound in the town this Saturday.

"We stand together as one town and one community and I urge everyone in Telford to show their solidarity with Wellington just as the community there stood firm for Telford last Saturday."

There will be live music in the Market Square from 11am, organised by Wellington Heritage and Arts Alive.

Shoppers who buy items in Wellington town centre can enter a prize draw sponsored by Telford & Wrekin Council by sending receipts of items they buy on Saturday to Corporate Communications, Telford & Wrekin Council, Civic Offices, Telford TF3 4HD.

Prizes will all be bought by the council from Wellington businesses. They include Sunday lunch for the family purchased as a hamper from stalls at Wellington market, a £50 microwave, a fish supper worth £30 from a chippy of your choice, £25 worth of back to school stationery for your children and a jar of sweets worth £10.

There will also be a colouring competition for children with a prize for the winner of a £25 voucher from WH Smith.

Entrants must be residents of Telford and Wrekin and cannot be council staff. Everyone who enters should put their contact details on the back of the receipt that they send in.

Chief Inspector Keith Gee, of West Mercia Police, also backed the campaign.

“In the build up we had very good support from the traders when we were out speaking to them,” said Chief Inspector Gee.

“It was a shame to see so many shops closed on the day but hopefully now that it has passed Wellington can quickly spring back into life and we can see the town swiftly returning to its normal hustle and bustle.”
