Excellent year for Shropshire GCSE results
Shropshire students have recorded GCSE grades above the national average it was revealed today.
Telford’s schools have recorded their best ever GCSE results, building on last year’s performance which were above national averages for the first time.
Councillor Paul Watling, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Families, said: “This shows that Telford already has improved high quality teaching and learning in all its schools.
“This will be further boosted by the Council’s plan to create co-operative learning communities across the borough.”
Individual school results that stand out in the borough include Hadley Learning Community where more than 50 per cent of this year’s pupils achieved the top grades.
Wrockwardine Wood Arts College results improved a massive 13 per cent on last year, bringing the total achieving 5 A*-C including English and Maths to 60 per cent. The Phoenix School has also recorded a 5 per cent increase on last year.
Chay Davis, Head teacher of Ercall Wood Technology College, said: “Over 79 per cent of our pupils have gained at least 5 A*-C grades, and increase of 24 per cent in just two years.
“It has been a very exciting year and I am very proud of all our school community for the best results ever. What is most pleasing is that we have so many pupils with a great set of results to take with them into further education.
“Ercall Wood is going from strength to strength and these best ever results are testament to the hard work of the pupils, staff and parents.”
Neil Stonehouse, head teacher of the Phoenix School, said: “’We are extremely pleased with this year’s examination results, they are the best the school has seen.
“We congratulate all our students, who have worked extremely hard and deserve the results they achieved and wish them well for the future.
“These are really exciting times for Phoenix School as we continue to raise attainment and look forward to providing more opportunities and facilities with the building of the new sports and learning community in Dawley.”
Councillor Aggie Caesar-Homden, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for education and skills, has congratulated pupils receiving their GCSE results today.
“Early indications are that Shropshire’s results remain very good and it looks like being another year of high achievement. Initial results indicate that overall Shropshire schools are likely to exceed national averages across most indicators including the recently introduced measure of the English Baccalaureate. This identifies achievement across a broader range of subjects, including English, mathematics, science, a humanities subject and a foreign language.
“We appreciate how hard the students have worked to gain their results and congratulate them on their achievements.
“Our thanks go to all those in our school communities who have contributed to their success. We recognise that our highly professional teachers, support staff, governors, volunteers and of course, parents and carers, have provided the support and encouragement necessary to enable the students to do so well.
“We wish all the students receiving their results today every success in the future.”
