Following a number of river deaths in Shrewsbury a section of safety fencing is to be installed following a recommendation by a taskforce.

The Task Force which is recommending the new safety fencing includes West Mercia Police, Shropshire Council and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The new safety railings will be installed along a stretch of the River Severn between the railway bridge close to the Weir in Castlefields and St Mary’s Water Lane.

A number of Facebook groups and petitions have called for barriers to be installed in Shrewsbury along the riverside following deaths in the river.

Tim Sneddon, head of environmental maintenance at Shropshire Council, said they are looking at installing safety railings at locations were there is an increased risk of people falling into the river.

Most Recently the body of the 27-year-old Mark Hodnett was discovered in the river close to Kingsland bridge after he went missing following a night out in the town on August 12th.
