Work begins today to remove a collapsed roof canopy which injured five workers at the Abraham Darby Academy in Telford.

Work begins to remove collapsed school roof canopy

The section of steel canopy collapsed without warning at around 4.25pm on Thursday 25 August. Five workers were injured during the incident, one was airlifted to hospital. All five men have since left hospital.

Constructors have been working on the new £35m redevelopment project for the last 15 months and expect to have the site ready for handover in December this year, with the opening scheduled for January 2012.

The Health & Safety Executive will be examining the structure as it's removed to investigate why the canopy collapsed.

Students returning to the Academy are unaffected by the incident which happened on a separate site from the existing academy building.

Road Closure
A section of Ironbridge Road in Madeley will be closed from 10:30am today until early evening and again on Tuesday from 9:45am until early evening.

Access for residents of The Keep estate next to the school will be maintained at all times.
