Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking members of the community around the Catherton Common area near Cleobury Mortimer to be vigilant following a number of gorse and grass fires in the area.

Fire service ask community to be vigilant following Catherton Common fires

Fire crews have attended nine fires in the area since 1st August 2011. The last fire was at 9.44pm on Tuesday 13th September. Crews from Cleobury Mortimer and Ludlow assisted by crews from Bewdley and Tenbury Wells (Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service) together with two specialist 4 x 4 vehicles attended a large gorse fire on Catherton Common. It took crews until 12.44am the next day to extinguish the fire.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are working with West Mercia Police, Shropshire Wildlife Trust and The Commoners Association to prevent these fires which are believed to be started deliberately.

These fires take up a lot of resources, and it means that whilst crews are tied up at these incidents they are unable to respond to other incidents where life may be at risk.

If anyone has any information about these fires they are asked to contact Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on 01743 260 200 or West Mercia Police on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
