Elderly Telford collision victim has handbag stolen whilst being treated by paramedics

The 70-year-old woman and an 84 year-old man were both seriously injured after they were in collision with a red Nissan whilst crossing the road in Lawn Central, Telford Town Centre at around 3.10pm.

The bag was later found by the Telford Plaza car park. The woman's purse was missing.

Police have today described the theft as "despicable" and have called on members of the public to help trace the offender.

Police Constable Rob Seager, who is investigating the collision, said: "The woman suffered serious head and leg injuries and had to be treated at the roadside immediately by paramedics.

"Her condition was life threatening so it was imperative that she received urgent medical care.

"Unfortunately an opportunist thief saw fit to steal the woman's bag as she was receiving the care she needed to save her life.

"The bag was later found by the Telford Plaza car park but the purse from within the bag was missing. The stolen purse - which is described as a black leather purse with a gold clasp - contained around £100 cash and various personal documents and bank cards.

"This act falls nothing short of despicable. I cannot see how much lower someone can go, given the circumstances.

"We are trying to identify the offender and would appeal to anyone with information about the theft to come forward.

"A number of people had gathered in the area so if you were there and saw anything, then please come forward. Or if you have heard of anyone talking about stealing a handbag or if you know who it is, then please contact us."

Anyone with information about the theft should contact Police on 0300 333 3000.
