A teenager has been arrested following a suspicious fire in which a woman had to be rescued yesterday afternoon. The fire started just before 3.30pm, at a property on Bembridge in Brookside, Telford.

Teenager arrested following suspicious house fire in Telford

Firefighters rescued a woman in her early 40s from an upstairs room with police being asked to attend.

This woman was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital immediately to be treated for smoke inhalation but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Several other people were also treated for smoke inhalation following this incident but all are expected to suffer no long term health problems as a result.

Detective Inspector John Elcock, from Telford Police, said:

"Officers from CID in Telford are now working with fire investigators to establish the cause of this fire and early indications are that it may have been started deliberately.

"A male youth has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and he is currently in custody at Malinsgate Police Station.

"At the present time the scene on Bembridge remains cordoned off and forensic work at the property is ongoing. This work is expected to continue for at least the rest of the day.

"To reassure the local community we will have additional police patrols in the area while our investigative work continues.

"As part of our investigation we are extremely keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this fire, or who anyone believes they may know how it started.

Therefore anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact officers in CID at Malinsgate Police Station on 0300 333 3000.

"Alternatively, please remember that information can also be left anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you'd rather not get directly involved yourself."
