Fire Service make appeal following increase in Shropshire fire deaths
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have today urged people to protect themselves and the elderly from fire following six deaths in Shropshire homes since April.

The appeal comes after the death of a woman following a house fire at Glebelands, Donnington, yesterday afternoon.
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service records run from April to March, with six deaths this year it marks the worst in 13 years. Last year one person died in a house fire in the county and in 2009 there were no deaths.
Speaking outside the scene of yesterday’s fire in Donnington, Head of Fire Prevention John Das Gupta this morning appealed to the public to ensure elderly and vulnerable people are protected from fire with smoke alarms.
Carers and neighbours are asked to watch out for them and take advice from the community fire safety department at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service on 01743 260260.
Around 167 people over the age of 65 die each year in fires to which brigades are called in the UK. Poor mobility, poor sense of smell and a reduced tolerance of smoke and burns contribute to fatalities. Major sources of ignition include cookers, materials, candles, coal fires, heaters and electric blankets.
