A 29-year-old man was attacked and robbed in Shrewsbury as he walked home from work during the early hours today.

Man attacked and robbed in Shrewsbury street

He was set upon from behind by two men who forced him to the ground where he was punched and kicked. They demanded money and stole his shoulder bag.

The robbery happened at around 4.40am in Crowmere Road, Monkmoor.

Police are carrying out house to house enquiries in the area and also appealing for help in tracing the stolen bag which contained a Liverpool football club t-shirt.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "This was an unprovoked attack by two young men on a passer-by making his way home.

"He was dragged to the ground and beaten around the head. Having grabbed his bag, his assailants ran off towards Racecourse Crescent.

"We are appealing for witnesses who might have seen the men before or after the incident and asking for any information which might help us identify them."

The police spokesperson also appealed for people in the Crowmere Road and Racecourse Crescent areas to check their gardens in case the stolen bag was discarded. It is described as a navy and grey backpack shoulder bag with a white divide.

The robbers are believed to be white and in their early twenties. Their victim suffered facial bruising and swelling but did not require hospital treatment.
