British Transport Police officers are seeking the public’s help to identify a man they want to speak to about an assault on board a train between Telford and Oakengates railway stations.

Transport Police appeal for information following assault on train

Officers have today released the CCTV image of a man they believe will have information which can assist their enquiries.

Investigating officer, PC Damien Atterbury, said: “The victim – a 31-year-old man from Shrewsbury – boarded the 2354hrs Shrewsbury-bound Arriva Trains Wales service at Wolverhampton rail station on Saturday 24 September 2011.

“During the journey, a man who had boarded the train at an unknown location between Wolverhampton and Telford stations, approached the victim and launched an unprovoked attack, punching him several times to the head.”

The incident happened just before the train reached Telford station and the offender was seen to leave the train at Oakengates station, PC Atterbury added.

“The victim was not seriously injured but received cuts and grazes to his head.

"Thankfully, incidents such as this are rare on the rail network but I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident, or knows the identity of the man in this photograph, to contact BTP in confidence.”

Anyone with information which they believe can assist is asked to contact British Transport Police on Freefone 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident reference B8/WWA of 26/10/2011. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111.
