Shropshire college leavers sought for exciting new event

Following the BBC’s ‘Up for Hire’ series which is showing on BBC3 this week and looks at youth unemployment and how to resolve this massive issue young people are currently facing, County Training will be running the ‘Bright Young Things ‘Launch Your Career’ event.

‘Up for Hire’ features presenter Richard Bacon and Radio 1’s Tina Dahealey hosting live debates over unemployment, the challenges young people face when seeking work and analyses the value of higher education qualifications to a persons career prospects. Celebrities, industry experts and top executives are all part of the audience offering advice and sharing their stories on how they worked their way up the career ladder. The programme also offers viewers the opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look at how seven of Britain’s best-known employers find new people.

County Training, part of Shropshire Council, have set up Bright Young Things to help young people who have recently left college and are looking to launch their careers with vocational training, rather than take the traditional university route.

17-20 year olds who have left college in the past 12 months are invited to come along and hear from Shropshire Chamber of Commerce MD, Richard Sheehan, about the current employment opportunities in Shropshire and what the future holds for young people living in the county. There will also be a young professional speaking at the event who has achieved a successful career by accessing employment through a work-based training programme.

County Training will be hosting the event which takes place from 3.30 – 5.00pm and will be available to share their advice and expertise on the world of work, whilst advertising a wealth of current career prospects available, through the Apprenticeship programme.

Jill Barcroft, Sales and Marketing Manager at County Training says “We understand the difficulty young people are currently experiencing, however our dedicated recruitment team are in contact with a range of businesses that want to employ Apprentices. Many organisations have now raised the bar even higher for the calibre of Apprenticeship applicants they are looking for to fill their vacancies, therefore County Training is looking for such individuals who have recently achieved AS or A Levels at college and are ready to take on a new challenge through work.”

In response Councillor Karen Burgoyne, Deputy Portfolio Holder for Learning and Skills at Shropshire Council comments “the Apprenticeship programme is a fantastic alternative for those who have chosen not to go to university, providing a range of career options through work-based training. We really need to educate young people in Shropshire of the value and importance of Apprenticeships and the Bright Young Things event is a fantastic example of how this is being done.”

So, do you think you are a ‘Bright Young Thing’? If the answer is yes, and you have recently left college with AS and A Levels or an equivalent Level 3 Qualification please call County Training to book your place at the Bright Young Things: Launch Your Career event. Please call 01743 255149 for an informal chat and to book. Visit www.shropshire.gov.uk/brightyoungthings for more info.

Equally, if you are a local employer and looking to recruit a ‘Bright Young Thing’ please call County Training to find out how, on the number listed above.
