It happened shortly before 11pm on Wednesday in Clarkes Lane off Overton Road.

The teenager was approached and grabbed by the man. He was threatened and told to hand over his possessions before punching the assailant hard on the left side of his face.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: "Although nothing was stolen this was a serious attempt to carryout a robbery. We are appealing for information which might help identify the offender. Call Oswestry police station on 0300 333 3000."

The man is described as white, aged about 19 to 24, about 5ft 9ins tall, of slim build with short blond hair shaven on the sides. He was wearing a white baseball cap, a dark tracksuit and dark coloured trousers.

Information can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers number, 0800 555 111.
