Telford's Southwater consultation extended

A major consultation to gain the public’s views on the latest developments relating to the regeneration of Telford Town Centre has been extended and moved.

Telford's Southwater consultation extended

The consultation will now take place in the foyer of the Town Centre Library over three days; Friday 11 November (10am – 5pm), Saturday 12 November (10am-1pm) and Monday 14 November (10am – 5pm).

It will provide residents and visitors with an opportunity to see the revised “phase one” programme of works for Southwater, including information about what buildings will be opening over the next three years.

“Phase one” proposals are in line with the outline planning consent for a £250m mixed use development in Southwater, secured in June 2010, and focussed on delivering a vibrant heart to the town.

Leisure developer Citygrove, who are investing in excess of £20m in Southwater, will be showcasing designs for an 11 screen cinema, 82 bedroom hotel and seven bars and restaurants, while Telford & Wrekin Council will be revealing plans for a multi storey car park – ahead of a planning application to be submitted next month.

Cineworld, who were recently announced as the cinema operator for Southwater, have been working closely with Citygrove on detailed designs for what will be their sixth multiplex cinema delivered in partnership.

The development, which is expected to generate 260 jobs, will build on Telford Town Centre’s already well established leisure destination at Southwater, which is home to the Ice Rink, Tenpin bowling, Mecca bingo and the fantastic Town Park and new visitor centre which will open in December.

As part of the public consultation, Telford & Wrekin Council will also be asking for feedback on the plans to deliver significant enhancements to the box road around Telford Shopping Centre.

This will include making the box road two way, with the aim of breaking down barriers to movement for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles around the town centre.

Telford & Wrekin Council leader Kuldip Sahota said: “The new location for the consultation will mean more people will be able to see our plans and we are pleased that we have been able to extend it to include the Monday as well.

“The Southwater development is a hugely exciting one for Telford and will result in the town centre having a vibrant bustling heart.”

The Southwater development is a partnership between Telford & Wrekin Council, the Southwater Event Group and the Homes and Communities Agency.

Southwater Event Group has also completed a major extension of their venue - The International Centre - to create additional event space which will attract even more business visitors to the area.
