Telephone scammers target Shropshire residents
Police in Shropshire today warned people to be on their guard following a series of complaints about telephone callers asking for personal banking details.
Inspector Chris Haslam, based at Shrewsbury, said: "During the past week or so, I have seen 10 to 15 reports from members of the public saying they have received telephone calls which they strongly suspect are scams.
"Most of the calls seem to be international whereby the caller talks about loans and concludes by asking for personal financial details. Fortunately, to my knowledge no-one who has contacted us has passed on their details."
He said some of the calls were persistent, persuasive and in some cases extremely aggressive.
"I'd like to thank people who have phoned in voicing their concerns and suspicions. Our advice is never part with personal details, especially bank or credit card details to anyone who phones you.
"If whatever is being offered sounds too good to be true then it probably is and if you suspect a scam, then again it probably is," Inspector Haslam added.
If in doubt about callers offering business deals, Shropshire Trading Standards may be able to advise.
