The new Woodlands Primary School and Abraham Darby Sports and Leisure Centre, part of the Abraham Darby Learning Community, will both open for business this January.

Handover of the new buildings will take place on Friday 9 December when keys will be given by Kier to Telford & Wrekin Council.

The next step in this process will involve the school packing up boxes and making the move over the Christmas period, leaving old tired buildings behind to start afresh this New Year.

The first day of school for Woodlands Primary School pupils will start on Monday 9 January. This will follow a launch event that will see the ribbon of the new school cut on Friday 6 January.

John Demmerling, head teacher at Woodlands Primary School said: “Both the children and the staff at Woodlands Primary School are absolutely ecstatic about the move.

“The new buildings will make a huge difference to the learning experience we can provide. We really can’t wait to get in there!”

The general public will be able to take make use of the new leisure facilities including the state of the art swimming pool and 70 station fitness suite from Monday 9 January.

Madeley Court aspirations members will be invited to drop in and try the new gym equipment between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 January.

Block bookers who currently use the facilities at Madeley Sports Centre are now being written to with regard to transferring their bookings from January.

The new facilities at the Abraham Darby Sports and Leisure Centre will replace those currently available at the Madeley Sports Centre.

The Madeley Sports Centre has been successfully managed by the Telford Trust for over 40 years. It will close to the public on Sunday 18 December to allow staff to move over to the new premises and complete operational training.

The facilities at Telford Snowboard and Ski Centre will remain open and are unaffected by the move.

Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Telford & Wrekin Council is pleased that both the leisure facilities and primary school can open for business for the start of the New Year. What a big difference these facilities will make to the local area!

Cllr Arnold England, cabinet member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said: “These wonderful new facilities will not only benefit existing customers but will open up opportunities for the whole community to become more active.

“On behalf of the Council, I would like to formally recognise and thank the Telford Trust for its longstanding commitment to providing high quality sporting opportunities in South Telford and for its support in making these new facilities a reality.

“We really do have a lot to celebrate this New Year and the Abraham Darby Learning Community is only the beginning of the £200m programme that Telford & Wrekin Council has to improve education, leisure and community facilities around the borough.”
