Police are appealing for information after a shop assistant confronted two suspected shoplifters and was assaulted.

Police appeal after Telford Shop Assistant Assaulted

The incident happened at the general store in Madeley on Park Street at around 8.50pm last night.

Two men walked into the shop and selected a number of bottles of alcohol. They then left the store without offering any payment for the goods.

The female shop assistant, aged in her 50's, chased after the men and grabbed one of them. He turned around and punched the woman in her stomach and hit her over the head with a plastic bottle of alcohol. She suffered slight injuries to her head and stomach. She did not receive any medical treatment.

The pair ran off along Park Street.

Police are investigating the matter and want to hear from anybody with information.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: "There were two other customers in the shop at the time and we would urge them to come forward.

"This was a very nasty incident and we want to hear from anyone who saw the suspects prior, during or just after the offence took place."

The suspect who assaulted the woman is described as white, aged in his late teens, around 5ft 8ins tall with blond hair. He was wearing a turquoise hooded top, grey and white deerstalker hat and blue/grey trousers.

Anyone with information should contact Telford Police on the new non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
