A commercial radio station which broadcasts across Shrewsbury, Oswestry and Telford has today announced it is to cease broadcasting at the end of the year.

Shropshire radio station The Severn to close

The Severn which broadcasts on 106.5, 107.1 and 107.4FM will stop broadcasting on 31 December.

The Severn launched in September 2006 broadcasting from Shrewsbury and Oswestry on 106.5 and 107.1FM. In 2009 much of the station relocated to Telford and began sharing presenters with its sister station 107.4 Telford FM which last September was rebranded to take the name The Severn.

The station is understood to be closing as a result of difficult trading conditions in the current economic climate.

The Severn is owned by MNA Broadcasting Ltd part of Midlands News Association which owns the local daily newspaper the Shropshire Star.

107.2 The Wyre which is also owned by MNA Broadcasting and broadcasts to north Worcestershire from Telford will also cease broadcasting on 31 December.

UPDATE
A recent announcement by MNA Broadcasting Ltd has revealed the radio stations will remain on air whilst a potential buyer is found.

Staff working at the two radio stations will continue to broadcast a mix of local news and information.
