Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Neil Jamieson, from West Mercia Police, has given his reaction having seen 24-year-old Shahmeel Khan, from Wellington, sentenced to a significant prison term after being found guilty of three counts of rape at Shrewsbury Crown Court last month.

Wellington man sentenced for three counts of rape

Khan, who is already serving an indeterminate sentence for robbery, has today been sentenced to a further ten years in prison which means it will be at least 2020 before he can even apply for parole.

Speaking about the sentencing, DCI Jamieson said:

Shahmeel Khan was found guilty of three counts of rape last month"This case forms part of a wider police operation within the Telford area and we are very satisfied with the sentence handed out at Shrewsbury Crown Court today. I hope that it acts as some consolation for the victim and her family as they move forward.

"Only Shahmeel Khan himself knows the reason why he carried out these three attacks; attacks that he has shown absolutely no remorse for.

"I cannot praise the victim highly enough for her bravery and determination in coming forward and detailing to the court the serious offences perpetrated against her. I would personally like to thank her for the patience and dignity she has shown throughout the investigation and what has been a long and complex criminal justice process.

"I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank those members of the public that took the time to come forward and offer information to my investigating team.

"In addition, I'd also like to place on record my thanks to the officers in the investigation team who worked tirelessly on the case. Whilst incidents of this nature remain unusual, I hope this conviction demonstrates that when they do occur, West Mercia Police are determined to catch those responsible to ensure that the area remains a safe place to live and work."
