Shropshire and Telford Trades Council call for further strike action over pensions
At an emergency meeting on pensions Shropshire and Telford Trades Council last night agreed to call for and support further strike action in the fight to save public sector pensions.
The trade union committee agreed that the government's imposition of a 'pay more, get less, work longer' attitude to pensions would undermine all pensions not just in the public sector but also in the private sector. Private employers have already started attacking their employees' pension schemes. The Trades Council called on all delegates and members of all local trade unions to agitate locally and call on unions at a national level to 'name the day' for the next round of strike action.
The Trades Council will be writing to the regional TUC with a motion which calls for fighting for a better pension agreement and a call for all unions to be united in achieving what's right for their members. The Council will also be sending delegates to a 'Unite the Resistance' conference in London this weekend to co-ordinate with other union members at a national level.
President of the Trades Council, Brett Davis said: 'We had a very positive meeting tonight. Union members are prepared for a long and hard fight in order to protect pensions. The consequences if we don't win are just too dire to consider - higher youth unemployment, decimation of public and private sector pensions and more reliance on the state in our old age. None of which makes economic sense'.
