New owner of Shropshire nightclub announces £1million investment and jobs boost

Shrewsbury’s iconic entertainment venue The Buttermarket is set for a return to its former glory with a £1 million-plus investment and the promise of new jobs, according to its new owner.

New owner of Shropshire nightclub announces £1million investment and jobs boost

The once-popular nightclub, which is located in Howard Street, has recently been purchased by Shrewsbury entrepreneur Martin Monahan, who already owns three venues in the town - The Peach Tree Restaurant, C:21Nightclub, and Spirit Champagne Bar and Nightclub, all of which are based in Abbey Foregate.

Mr Monahan commented: “I’m very excited about taking over The Buttermarket and returning it to its rightful place as Shrewsbury’s premier entertainment venue. It’s going to be a huge challenge but one that my team are certainly looking forward to meeting head-on. Once completely operational, the venue will provide around 60 new full and part-time jobs in the town.

“The Buttermarket has played a significant role in bringing a wide range of live music to Shrewsbury in the past, and this is certainly going to be a main focus in the future too. We are looking to work with various music promoters to bring some big-name acts to the stage once again in Shrewsbury.

‘Now the sale of the property has been completed, we’re looking to finalise our refurbishment plans in the next couple of weeks.”

Mr Monahan would not be drawn on specific details about the refurbishment, but is set to reopen the cellar part of the venue within a few months. He revealed that the two main floors upstairs would take considerably longer to refurbish, and may well be relaunched in the Autumn.

“We’ve got some amazing ideas and plans, which we hope to finalise very soon. With my team’s experience in already running one of the most popular venues in Shrewsbury at C:21, I have no doubt that we will, with the support of Shropshire’s general public, put The Buttermarket back on the map as a major multi-purpose entertainment venue for the whole of the county.”

Anyone wishing to promote live music or host events at The Buttermarket should contact Grant Lees on 01743 355055.
