A 71-year-old man has become the latest distraction burglary victim in Shropshire.

Distraction burglars target pensioner in Shifnal

Police are now reminding elderly people to keep their front and back doors locked and not to let strangers inside under any circumstances.

The burglary happened at a home in Greenfields, Shifnal at around 6pm yesterday when a man entered the front door of the home saying there were "problems with the water".

He then said there was an airlock and walked into the kitchen, turning on the taps. After telling the occupant to keep any eye on the water flow he left the room. Taps were also turned on in the bathroom.

Minutes later, after the man had left, the pensioner discovered various rooms had been searched and around £140 taken from a wallet.

Police believe the caller probably had an accomplice who also sneaked into the premises.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "It is so important for people to remember not to let strangers into the home, whatever reason they may give for doing so.

"Tell them to go away and that you are calling the police. If you have doubts at all, call the police immediately on the non emergency 101 number. Remember the slogan - "If in doubt, keep them out."

An appeal has also been issued for witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity in the Greenfields area early yesterday evening.

The man was described as white, about 5ft 8ins tall, aged mid to late thirties and of stocky build. He was wearing a dark coloured woollen hat to hide his hair, black working jacket, dark trousers and orange and green gloves.
