A 36 year-old woman was knocked to the floor as a man snatched her handbag in Telford yesterday evening.

Woman has bag snatched in Telford

The woman was walking along Park Avenue in Madeley when the incident happened at around 6.45pm.

A man, who was walking in the same area, knocked the woman to the floor and stole her bag before running away.

A passer-by stopped and helped the woman who was not injured.

Police are investigating and are keen to trace other motorists travelling through the area at the time.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: "The victim was walking from Church Street towards Madeley High Street. She crossed the entrance and exit road to Tesco when a man, who was walking in the opposite direction on the same side of the road, passed the woman and pushed her, causing her to fall to the ground. He pulled at the woman's handbag and managed to grab it before running away.

"A passer-by stopped and helped the woman and police were called.

"Police believe that a number of other motorists drove past at the time the incident took place. We are eager to identify these individuals and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward."

The suspect is described as a white male, aged in his late teens/early twenties, of stocky build with black hair that was brushed forward. He was wearing light grey coloured jogging bottoms and a light grey hooded top with red on it to the front.

The woman's bag is described as silver and black with a snakeskin design. It contained a bus pass, various cards and a black and white tiger print purse containing £30 cash.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect or the whereabouts of the bag and its contents should contact Telford Police on the non emergency number 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.
