Streetscene team collect 232 bags of rubbish along stretch of A49

Over the last six weeks Shropshire Council’s streetscene south west team have been busy litter picking along the A49 verges and hedgerows.

Streetscene team collect 232 bags of rubbish along stretch of A49

Every Wednesday and Thursday the team have been out litter picking various sections of the road spanning from Woofferton to All Stretton, which is just over 22 miles.

A total of 232 bags have been collected. This works out at around 11 bags per mile of road, collected over 108 working hours.

Councillor Martin Bennett, Shropshire Council’s deputy cabinet member, said:

“I’d like to thank the team for their hard work in cleaning up the grass verges and hedgerows along this busy and fast road. Over the last six weeks they’ve collected an astronomical amount of litter.

“This has taken a huge amount of time and effort, and I’d like to urge people to take their litter home with them so that it stays clean and tidy.”

Rosanna Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North, said:

“Rubbish left lying around our roads and verges looks untidy and will not help us attract visitors to our towns and villages.

“I urge all road users to dispose of their litter in a bin or take it home, as the cost of collecting and disposing this is a great burden to the council tax payers of Shropshire.”

David Evans, a Shropshire Councillor for Church Stretton and Craven Arms, added:

“Congratulations to the team for all the hard work collecting the 232 bags of litter. I would just like to remind people that this exercise cost money, so please save the expense and take your litter home with you.”

Tracey Huffer, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow East, added:

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the streetscene team for all their hard work in keeping our roadsides clean and litter free. This is a huge amount of rubbish collected, and really highlights the need for the public to be a lot more conscious of how they casually deposit their litter.”

Some sections of this busy road cannot be litter picked due to the verges and hedgerows being too close to it.
