Four public car parks in Wellington town centre are set to become short stay, from next Monday.

Car parks in Wellington to become short stay

Telford & Wrekin Council say they are making the changes following concerns that shoppers, and visitors can find it difficult to park close to the centre of Wellington or access health and leisure facilities due to vehicles parking for long periods of time.

Its hoped a faster turnover of spaces will better cater for shoppers and visitors accessing facilities.

There are around 850 spaces available on Council run car parks in Wellington, just under 330 of those spaces will become short-stay.

Short stay spaces will be available at Nailors Row, Victoria Road North, Swimming Pool West Car Park and Swimming Pool East Car Park.

From Monday, parking will be allowed for a maximum stay of 3 hours at any one time with no return within 2 hours. The restrictions will apply from 7am to 6pm every day of the week.

The remaining car parks of Belmont/Tan Bank, Railway Station, Ten Tree Croft, Wrekin Road and Victoria Road South will remain as long stay car parks.

Parking on all short and long stay car parks will remain free.

Cllr Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for transport and community protection said, ”We have looked to provide an appropriate balance of car parking spaces for both long and short term parking.

“We hope that the proposals will mean that shoppers, visitors to attractions such as the new Wellington Civic & Leisure Centre and people attending medical appointments will be able to find spaces closer to the centre of town.

“We are still providing plenty of spaces for commuters and workers to park all day in the long stay car parks. We will be monitoring the changes to make sure the changes work as planned.”
