Lives put at risk as rubble is dumped on Shropshire road
Builder's rubble is being dumped on a Shropshire road putting lives at risk, a police officer warned today.
Mounds of rubble - including bricks, cement, sand, tarmac and even drain covers - have been dropped on country lanes near the village of Uppington between Shrewsbury and Telford.
Police Constable Dave Harte, the Local Policing Officer for Shrewsbury Rural South, said three incidents have been reported during the past fortnight.
He believed the waste materials had been deliberately tipped into the road and warned that those responsible were putting motorists' lives at risk.
The latest incident happened overnight on Sunday on road from Uppington to Eaton Constantine. PC Harte said rubbish had been dropped in the middle of the road to a depth of around two feet and covering three-quarters of the road. A local farmer helped police clear the obstruction.
"This has also happened on two other occasions on The Avenue, a country lane running through Uppington near the cricket club," said PC Harte. "I think a building contractor has got a flat bed lorry and is just tipping the rubbish as he drives along.
"It is so dangerous. Road safety is being compromised. If a motorcyclist runs into it they will stand no chance. Someone will be seriously hurt if this continues," he warned. "I am appealing for any information which might help identify the offender - contact Shrewsbury police station by calling 101."
