Lib Dem, Minister of Defence, Nick Harvey, is to visit the County on May 8. He will spend the afternoon on official visits and discussions with the Services and the evening meeting Shropshire’s highly regarded Liberal Democrat Party members.

Defence minister to visit Shropshire

Dr Charles West, Chair of Shrewsbury Liberal Democrats, said:

"The Minister is aware of the issues about employment in Shropshire and the contribution that the Forces make. He has been planning for some months to come here and see matters on the ground. He is also aware of the reputation that Shropshire Liberal Democrats have within the Party and the part that they have played campaigning on both local and national issues. We shall be delighted to welcome him to Shrewsbury.”

Cllr Nigel Hartin, leader of the Shropshire Council LD’s, added:

“This is an important economic development matter for Shropshire, as we recognised in the battle to save Shawbury. A similar threat to Cosford would be a severe blow. Peter Phillips took up this issue last spring when he was our economic spokesperson. Unfortunately, his Tory Cabinet counterpart showed no interest in such a visit.”

In the evening, Nick Harvey will meet Party members for a Question & Answer Session which promises to be a lively affair. He said:

“I am very grateful to the local Liberal Democrats for inviting me to Shropshire. After having recently won four Council by-elections in a row and locally recruiting more new subscribers than any party in England, it will be a pleasure to meet members of this successful and vibrant local party. In the context of the current economic climate, when communities in Shropshire and up and down the country are facing enormous challenges, it will be interesting and insightful to hear from local members and answer their questions.”
