Volunteers needed to support Disability Community Games
Telford & Wrekin Council is organising a Disability Community Games this summer as part of the ongoing campaign to mark the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the borough.
The council is working with local providers to stage the Games over the August Bank Holiday weekend – to coincide with the beginning of the Paralympic Games.
The games are part of the adoption of The Games And Me programme in Telford and Wrekin which encourages everybody to have their own 2012 Games experience.
The planned Disability Community Games on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August will incorporate a whole range of activities to give participants and their families and supporters that festival feel.
The council is looking for organisations and individuals that could provide sports, dance, performances, crafts and visuals for the event.
Some sports have already been confirmed including boccia (similar to boules), tennis, five a side football, swimming, walking, skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, tubing and sailing.
A number of organisations are already working together to put the event on including Telford Boccia Bowls Club, Club 2000, Club 17, A2A, Telford Sailability, Telford Sports Forum, ican2 Sports and Leisure, DISKs, Walk About Wrekin, Short Breaks, STW Energize and First Point Tennis.
Councillor Arnold England, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Well-being, said: “This is already a fantastic effort to put on a very special event to reflect the fact that the Paralympic Games are happening nationally.
“However, we do still need volunteers to come forward and support it. We are looking for other sports, physical activity, arts, performers or cultural providers and also volunteers to help out on the day.”
Anyone who has other ideas on how they can support the event is urged to contact Telford & Wrekin Council’s Sports and Physical Activity Manager Rachel Threadgold on 01952 382334 or email: rachel.threadgold@telford.gov.uk
