The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Severn in Shropshire following the recent heavy rainfall.

Levels this morning on the River Severn at the Buildwas Gauge was 3.65 metres and rising. A peak level of between 3.7 and 3.8 metres is expected to occur this morning. Levels at Crew Green, Montford Bridge and Shrewsbury have already peaked.

A flood Alert has also been issued for the rivers Tern, Perry, Roden, Strine and Meese and their tributaries.

In the south of the county the River Teme, River Onny and River Corve & their tributaries upstream of Ludlow are also on flood alert.

Levels on the Severn Vyrnwy Confluence were falling this morning following a peak of 5.20 metres at Crewe Green yesterday.

Yellow Alert of Severe Weather
The Met Office have issued a yellow alert as heavy rain and strong winds will spread northwards across Shropshire tomorrow.

The Met Office said “This may lead to some local flooding given the recent wet conditions, and that northeasterly winds may exceed 50 mph in some locations, bringing the risk of falling trees. There is a chance that this warning may be upgraded to amber over the weekend.”

The Environment Agency has previously warned that the drought gripping swathes of England could increase the risk of flash flooding as rain is less easily absorbed by dry, compacted soils, instead running off and causing localised floods.
