A man was robbed of a significant amount of cash as he walked along a cycle path in Telford yesterday. The 23-year-old man was walking along Park Lane in Woodside when he noticed a figure walking behind him.

The suspect approached him and the victim felt a blow to his head, causing him to fall to the ground. A significant amount of cash was stolen from the victim's satchel.

Police are investigating the matter, which occurred at around 2pm yesterday, and are eager to trace witnesses.

The victim suffered head and facial injuries and was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital for treatment. He remains in hospital and his condition is described as stable.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: "The victim had been travelling by bus to Woodside and got off outside The Elizabethan public house. He then walked along a cycle path, which runs behind The Elizabethan, when he was assaulted and robbed.

"The man was carrying in excess of £1,000, for work purposes, and all of that money was stolen from his bag.

"The victim was extremely shaken up and remains in hospital.

"We believe an individual was walking along the path moments before the attack happened and we would really like to speak to this man or woman, or indeed anyone else who may have witnessed the robbery or saw the victim beforehand.

"We would also like to speak to anyone who knows of anyone who has suddenly got a bit more money than usual and has no explanation as to how the extra cash has come about."

Anyone with information should contact Telford Police on 101. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
