Shrewsbury Regatta cancelled as river levels set to rise
Organisers of the Shrewsbury Regatta today cancelled the event for the first time in its history over safety concerns following a predicted rise in river levels at the weekend.

Members of the Pengwern Boat Club who organise the annual event called off the regatta following the recent heavy rain, which has fallen in the upper catchment area of the River Severn.
Shrewsbury Regatta secretary Ali Thomas said:
“Our concern is the safety on and off the water of competitors and we have decided that given the peak of 2.3 m that is due to come through tomorrow and a predicted level 1 metre above normal racing levels we will not be able to put the necessary safety in place to ensure safe racing on Saturday.
“In addition our trailer parking area is waterlogged as is the carpark. Watching 2 landrovers sliding all over the place without a trailer on the back has convinced me that there is no way we can safely park trailers.
The Shrewsbury Regatta is a major fixture in many rowing club calendars across the country attracting entries ranging from Glasgow to the Thames the Regatta is very popular with crews of all ages and abilities.
