Residents form new polital party in Telford
A new political party has been set up to cover Telford. People First has been formed as a result of Wellington residents coming together to challenge the efficiency of Wellington Medical Practice following a number of complaints.
People First, despite being set up for only a few weeks, has already been approached by members of the public anxious over other matters apart from Wellington Medical Practice, and the group considered that forming a serious political group would answer the needs of concerned residents at a time of extreme worry as people face job uncertainty and cuts to their public services.
People First aims to appeal to those who are frustrated with the main parties. We stand for a fair society where people come first instead of financial motives. We do not believe cuts are necessary because we believe there is an alternative to the slash and burn policies of the main parties.
Ian Drummond from Wellington said 'there are very real problems which are damaging the social fabric as a result of government cuts. The most vulnerable in our society are suffering. It is the intention of People First to support such people now and in what may hopefully be better times ahead and to offer such support outside the constraints of the conventional party system'.
Cllr Pat McCarthy, who joined the group when he was approached for help with Wellington Medical Practice, said 'we are already looking at several local issues which members of the public have contacted us about - for example disabled access to Wellington Station and an increase in personal home care fees. I appeal to Telford residents to get in touch with us if they have concerns as a result of the failure of the main parties. Some politicians only put their heads above the parapet when they can maximise political advantage. People First will buck that trend and will do what it says on the tin - stand up for people'.
People First meet the first Wednesday of the month, King Street Cafe, Wellington at 7pm.
