New Mayor of Shrewsbury takes office
The new Mayor of Shrewsbury has been elected into office at the annual meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council.

The Mayor-making ceremony was held at Theatre Severn last night and saw Councillor Keith Roberts take over the role of civic leader from former Mayor, Councillor Tony Durnell. Councillor Jon Tandy was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Shrewsbury’s Mayors are selected according to their years of service, rather than their political allegiance, in line with the tradition of the former borough council.
Outgoing Mayor, Councillor Durnell, said his year in office had been ‘a very special time.’
“I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped make this year such a special one for both myself, and the Mayoress,” said Councillor Durnell.
“We have had so many wonderful experiences in the last 12 months and we have been able to fulfil many of the things we wanted to for the residents and the town of Shrewsbury, and in particular, for our young people. We will both be continuing to work on issues dear to our heart in the future.”
“I would like to say a huge thank you to Councillor Keith Roberts for his support as Deputy Mayor this year and wish him and Catherine the best of luck for their year in office – enjoy it, it’s such a special time.”
Councillor Roberts will now be officially sworn in at a civic service held at St Chad’s Church on May 20.
The service will start at 11.45am and will be preceded by a parade from the castle to St Chad’s, departing at approximately 11am, by way of Castle Street, Pride Hill, Shoplatch, Bellstone, St. John’s Hill and St. Chad’s Terrace, led by the Porthywaen Silver Band.
Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Following the church service the traditional Loving Cup ceremony will take place at which the Mayor will be invited to drink from the Loving Cup and toast the Queen and town. The congregation will then be invited to share the toast.
