Police today arrested a third man in connection with an armed robbery investigation in Shropshire.

Third arrest made in Shropshire armed robbery investigation

A 48-year-old man was detained in Wolverhampton this morning in connection with the robbery in March on a couple at their home near Pattingham.

He was arrested in a joint operation involving officers from West Mercia Police and West Midlands Police in Great Hampton Street at around 11.20am following the execution of a search warrant at an address in the city.

He was taken to Wednesfield police station before being transferred to Shrewsbury police station on suspicion of committing robbery at a country home in Lower Rudge, on the Shropshire-Staffordshire border during the night of March 9.

West Midlands businessman Richard Barnfather and his fiancée were held at gunpoint by three masked men who smashed their way into their home. They were threatened and tied up before the gang made off with jewellery worth around £50,000 together with three cars - an Aston Martin, Range Rover and a Mercedes - from the drive.

The three vehicles were found abandoned within a few hours at locations in Tipton, Smethwick and Wolverhampton.

Today's development follows the arrest on April 5 of 21-year-old Nathan McDonald, of Merridale Street, Wolverhampton who has been charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. His case is due to be heard by Shrewsbury Crown Court.

A 17-year-old youth arrested in Wolverhampton on April 27 on suspicion of robbery is currently on police bail while inquiries continue.

Detective Sergeant Dave Meyer, of West Mercia Police, said: "I can confirm that around 12 officers from the West Mercia and West Midlands forces executed a warrant at an address in Wolverhampton this morning. Officers later arrested a 48-year-old man in Great Hampton Street.

He said today's arrest and the overall police investigation, had been assisted by members of the public coming forward with information. "I'd like to thank these people and urge anyone else with information about the robbery or those involved, to make contact by calling Shrewsbury CID on 0300 333 3000."

A £14,000 reward remains on offer for the arrest and conviction of the offenders. Information can also be supplied to the anonymous independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, for which a reward may also be paid.
