Telford and Wrekin events in build up to Olympic Torch Relay arrival
As the Olympic Flame gets ever closer to the borough of Telford and Wrekin on Wednesday May 30, a number of events are being held in the build up to the big day.

The Torch will enter Telford and Wrekin at 3.14pm on Wednesday by crossing the Iron Bridge. It will also be carried through Telford Town Centre before exiting the north eastern end of the borough through Newport.
Events being held in the build up to this historic event include special workshops where members of the public can turn up and make something for them to wave as the torch goes past.
The first of these is being held in Telford Town Centre on Saturday between 11am and 4pm and there is another on the day the torch comes to the borough on Wednesday between 11am and 3pm.
The day before the torch arrives, schools in south Telford are celebrating its impending arrival by holding the Lakeside Learning Community Schools Torch Relay. This event on Tuesday involves seven schools and starts at 10am from Hollinswood Infants.
The schools relay will be joined by local sporting hero and Paralympian wheelchair racer Mickey Bushell, who will open the event.
Each school will be involved in a mock relay and the torch will be passed from one school to the next with it finishing at the Lord Silkin School, where it will be greeted by brass and samba bands, a fireworks display, speeches and a celebration lunch.
Guests of honour will include Mickey, who won Paralympic silver in the Beijing games and has also won the World Championshop and held the world record.
Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for Leisure and Well-being, said: “The Olympic torch relay is well and truly gripping the imagination of the country with crowds turning out in their thousands to welcome the flame to their communities and celebrate Britain’s hosting of the Olympics.
“Everyone is really looking forward to the flame coming to Telford and Wrekin on Wednesday. It will be a truly historic day and the excitement is already palpable.
“I think it is fantastic that our communities are celebrating its impending arrival by holding a range of events in the build up and I hope everyone enjoys the moment.”
