A man was robbed of his mobile phone following a night out in Wellington during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Man robbed by group of five in Wellington

The 33 year-old man, was on his way home when he stopped and sat by the side of the road in Whitchurch Drive at around 4am. Moments later he was approached by a group of up to five men.

Members of the group struck up a conversation with the man and he became suspicious and started to walk away.

It’s believed the robbers assaulted the man before they stole his iPhone 4 and fled.

He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital by ambulance, where he was treated for cuts and bruises to his face and head.

A Telford Police spokeswoman said: "The man doesn't remember much from the attack, apart from speaking to the men then waking up in hospital.

"We are eager to trace the offenders and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.

"In particular we want to trace any passers by in the area who saw a man sitting on the side of the road. Whitchurch Drive is a busy main route and it is likely that some individuals would have driven along that road at the time, especially taxi drivers, taking people home from a night out.

"We also want to hear from anyone who knows of any individual who is suddenly in possession of an iPhone 4 without explanation, or who has tried to sell one in the last day or so."

Anyone with information should contact Telford Police on 101. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
