A woman was struck on the head and knocked to the ground in Shrewsbury as she walked home during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Woman struck on the head and knocked to the ground in Shrewsbury

The woman was walking in Sutton Lane at around 2.30am. A short time earlier, the 27-year-old had been spoken to and followed by two men.

Police say the two incidents may be linked and appealed for witnesses or information which might help their investigation.

The woman was extremely upset and frightened but not physically injured.

PC Rob Buxton, the investigating officer, said she was walking along Sutton Lane towards the roundabout when she heard people behind her. "She just thought it was people walking home and thought nothing of it. The next thing she remembers is being hit on the back of the head and being on the grass verge at the roundabout with some young lads asking is she was okay.

"She was examined by ambulance staff and found to have no injuries. None of her possessions were taken."

PC Buxton said that a short time earlier as she made her way along Betton Street, two young men sat on a wall by the bridges, stopped the victim and spoke to her. She then continued walking towards the bridge at the top of Betton Street while the men followed pestering her.

She then ran back into Old Coleham and hid behind a vehicle. A black or Asian man came out of the nearby flats and asked if she was okay. Having explained she had been scared by the two men, the man went to look and returned to say they had got into a car and gone.

PC Buxton added: "I would like to identify the two men who followed the woman. They may not be connected to the assault or they may be the offenders. I would also urge the man who assisted her to come forward, as well as anyone else who can assist."

The number to call at Shrewsbury police station is 101. Information can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
