Shrewsbury play area closes following suspected drain collapse
A popular children's play area in Shrewsbury has today been closed for health and safety reasons following a suspected drain collapse.
The play area in The Quarry was closed after the problem was discovered by officers at Shrewsbury Town Council during a routine check of the site.
An investigation by Severn Trent is now underway on the drain which runs from the Quarry swimming baths underneath the playground site.
Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Nutting said: “It’s unfortunate that we have had to close the Quarry play area, especially over the jubilee weekend, due to reasons beyond our control. We are working with our partners at Shropshire Council to get the situation resolved as soon as possible.”
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said: “Our staff at the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre have changed the timing and reduced the volume of water to the drains to try and alleviate the problem. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and we are working closely with the town council and Severn Trent to reopen the play area as soon as possible.”
