Over 40 beacons will be lit across Shropshire this evening to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Jubilee beacons to burn across Shropshire

The Shropshire beacons will be part of a network of over 4,000 lit between 10pm – 10.30, by communities and others throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, along with the Commonwealth and UK Overseas Territories.

The Queen will light the UK’s final beacon from the concert stage where a host of stars will perform in her honour at about 10.30pm before a firework display at Buckingham Palace.

Bruno Peek, Pageantmaster of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee beacons, said the number of communities who had registered to hold celebration bonfires was "truly amazing" and easily surpassed the 2,012 they hoped to attract.

Britain has a long history of beacon lighting spanning many hundreds of years. We have celebrated Royal Weddings, Jubilees and Coronations by lighting beacons on village greens, castle battlements, church towers, farms, beaches, front gardens, car parks and mountain tops!

In 1897 beacons were lit nationally to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. In 1977 and 2002 beacons were lit to celebrate The Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilees.
