Five Telford & Wrekin Council schools have been successful in gaining gold status in a national arts award scheme.

Haughton School, Wrockwardine Wood Arts College, Redhill Primary School, St Mathew’s C of E aided Primary School, Wrekin View Primary School and Nursery were recognized to receive gold Artsmark awards.

Artsmark is a nationally recognised award supported by the Department of Education and the Department of Culture Media and Sport. It is presented by Arts Council England.

The award sets the standard for an outstanding arts provision. By achieving the Artsmark schools demonstrated their commitment to providing quality arts and culture for children and young people.

The children aged five – six from Haughton School were given an opportunity to put their creative design skills to the test and give their schools outdoor play area a brand new look. The children worked in conjunction with local graffiti artist Richard Shaw and students from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Turnaround Project.

Councillor Arnold England cabinet member for Leisure & Wellbeing, said: “It is wonderful to see so much artistic talent from children and young people within the Telford & Wrekin.

“It is a great achievement by all the schools chosen to receive the award. The quality of all the work produced shows off their creative skills. We are extremely proud of everybody who took part”
