A new state of the art skate park in Donnington hailed by skaters as “one of the best in Shropshire” is today hosting its launch event.

New skate park launches in Donnington

The new £100,000 facility at Donnington Recreation Ground features the first concrete skate bowl in the county.

It also includes a 2m high deep end with clam shell pocket as well as a 1.8m high tombstone quarter pipe and was chosen in consultation with local youngsters.

Funded by the Big Lottery Fund ‘Fairshare Trust programme’, (administered by The Community Foundation for Shropshire and Telford) and Telford & Wrekin Council, the new facility has already been well received by users.

Saturday 16 June will see a launch of the new facility consisting of skate company ’Tribe’ bringing professional skaters and BMX freestylers to demonstrate their skills and a skate / BMX competition with prizes. The event runs from 11am-4pm.

A number of children’s activities will also be available such as rodeo bull, face painting, table football competitions, Moto stick freestyle, Climbing Wall, bouncy castles, human demolition, football coaching, cycle/BMX coaching and gladiators.

Local skater Nick Binnington said: “The new skate park is proving popular at the moment, which is great as we are seeing some professional skaters coming to the area.”

Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for Leisure and Well-being, said: “The skate park originally arose out of the consultation from the management plan for the recreation ground and I want to thank everyone who contributed including local Councillors Liz Clare and Clive Mason.

“It's great that so many people had a say in what the council has provided and I am sure it will be well used.

“Telford & Wrekin Council has now completed revamping the children’s equipped Play Area at the site, provided a brand new ball court and now Donnington has a fantastic and extremely popular new skate park."
