Shrewsbury students to experience life in the slums

Students from a local college are preparing to experience life in the slums this weekend in a bid to highlight the poor living conditions of over one billion people across the globe.

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, in partnership with a number of the town’s schools and the Shrewsbury Youth for Christ organisation, has organised a ‘Slum Survivor’ event which will see students embark on a series of challenges that simulate aspects of slum life including sleeping in a self-constructed shelter, having a limited diet, and only being allowed the most basic of possessions.

The group will be setting up their slum outside Central, Shrewsbury Baptist Church in Claremont Street from 6pm this Friday until 1pm on Sunday, and will not only be helping to increase awareness of the plight of so many individuals and families worldwide, but will be raising much needed funds for charities working in slum areas.

Martin Ward, Principal at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College, said: “This is a wonderful initiative and one that is hugely valuable in helping to raise awareness of the plight of so many people worldwide. We are extremely proud of all our students who have volunteered to take part in this unique event and we wish them every success in what is set to be a very tough challenge.

“The whole team has worked extremely hard to coordinate this event and we would welcome people to come along, see what the students are doing and perhaps even make a donation to a very worthy cause.”
