Dawley Market petition to lobby the Government

Staff from Telford & Wrekin Council will be manning a stand in Dawley Market today.

Dawley Market petition to lobby the Government

The aim is to gather signatures from members of the public for a petition to lobby the Government to allow the market to return to Dawley High Street.

Residents are asked go along to Dawley Market to show their support and to sign the petition.

Telford & Wrekin Council will lobby Government to review the current position which does not allow the market to re-locate on the High Street.

Current laws mean that the market cannot lawfully take place in the High Street because it would cause a regular obstruction of the highway – although a one off event is permitted.

The council believes this legislation is too rigid and needs to be more flexible and if this change is introduced, it would enable the market to be held regularly in the High Street – which is what stallholders would like.

Councillor Overton, Deputy Leader with special responsibility for Borough Towns Development said “This is local people’s opportunity to have their say about what is happening with Dawley market.

“If you would like to see the market back on the High Street then visit the stand.”
