A large amount of high value gold, silver and precious stone jewellery has been stolen during a daylight burglary in Market Drayton.

Jewellery stolen during daylight burglary in Market Drayton

The offender or offenders got into the house through an upstairs window, the inside lock of which was reached through a smaller, open window above it.

Police today renewed warnings for people to always keep doors and windows locked, even those on upper floors, when they were out or not in the room.

The house in Newcastle Road was broken into between about 8am and 6pm on Monday.

Among the items stolen were a distinctive black cameo Wedgwood ring and necklace, an engagement ring with two diamonds either side of a sapphire, an 18ct gold ring with 10 small diamonds, an 18ct gold Victorian double-banded bracelet, a Cameo shell broach and an 18ct gold Victorian ladies pocket watch.

Police Constable Mark Milton, who is investigating the burglary, said it was likely the offender or offenders had got to the rear window of the house initially from the front, which is on a relatively busy road.

"In this incident, access to the house itself was gained using a small, open window that allowed access to the lock of the bigger window below," he said.

"Never leave any windows or doors open or unlocked when you are out or even when you have left the room for a few moments, as even windows that seem too small to fit through can be used to break in.

"In addition to the jewellery stolen, a jewellery box was also taken. If anyone has been offered any such jewellery for sale under dubious circumstances, please contact police on 101.

"It is highly likely someone has seen the offender or offenders in the area and I would also urge them to get in touch."
Information can also be passed on via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, where operators do not even ask for your name.
