Motorists using the busy Sundorne Road in Shrewsbury are set be caught up in traffic delays from today as work to create an entrance for a new £13m medical centre begins.

Delays for motorists as Shrewsbury roadworks begin

The junction of Meadow Darm Drive and Sundorne Road in Shrewsbury. A mini island will be created as part of the main entrance into the new medical centre. The work costing the region of £180,000 will take approximately eight weeks to complete. Whilst the work is being carried out, traffic lights will be in place on Sundorne Road when necessary.

A full road closure will take place between 9.30am and 4.30pm on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 August so that the road can be resurfaced. A signed diversion route will be in place for these two days.

As well an entrance to the medical centre being created, other improvements to Sundorne Road will include a mini roundabout, a puffin crossing and new kerbs and road surfacing. Work to repair pavements and roads close to the site will also take place.

Businesses on Sundorne Road will remain open during the works, but during the weekend of the road closure access may be required via the signed diversion route.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said:

“We would like to apologise in advance for any disruption this work may cause. As always, we will endeavour to complete this work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption to road users and nearby properties.”

Karen Burgoyne, local Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, said:

“Sundorne and Battlefield residents have already been made aware of the disruptions to come via the joint councillors’ newsletter. I very much hope that they’ll find that the additional improvements to be made to that section of Sundorne Road will be worth the inconvenience for a couple of months.”
