Police issued an appeal for information today following three street robberies in Shrewsbury during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Three attacked and robbed in Shrewsbury

They are seeking information on three men believed responsible for attacks on men walking alone in the Dana footbridge and Castle Walk area between 12.40 and 1.25am.

All three victims were attacked from behind, knocked to the ground and punched and kicked in the face. They had their pockets searched before the attackers ran off.

Two of the victims suffered face injuries needing treatment at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The other had bruising.

Detective Constable Chris Thomas, the investigating officer, said today: "We are linking these three incidents. It seems likely the same men were responsible for all the attacks.

"They were vicious and unprovoked assaults on people who had been on a night out in the town. I am appealing for any information which might help identify those responsible. Call Shrewsbury CID on 101 or contact the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."

The attackers were described as white, in their early twenties and wearing "chavvy style" clothing.

The first robbery happened between 12.40 and 12.50am when a 56-year-old man was set upon from behind as he walked over the Dana footbridge. He was punched and kicked after being knocked to the ground and his pockets searched. His assailants ran off towards Castle Foregate on finding nothing of value.

A 27-year-old man was attacked just after 1am on the steps from Castle Street to the Dana footbridge. Again, he was struck from behind, knocked to the ground, kicked and punched. His mobile phone, which fell from a pocket, was stolen. He suffered facial bruising but did not require hospital treatment.

The third incident followed a similar pattern, with a 38-year-old man struck repeatedly in the face on the Castle Walk at around 1.20am. He was treated in hospital for a suspected broken nose and fractured cheek. Once again, the offenders searched his pockets, making off with £15 and a mobile phone.

DC Thomas added: "All three were violent and cowardly attacks on unsuspecting lone individuals. It is vital anyone with information which might help our investigation, should get in touch without delay."
