Police have warned they will seize motorised scooters being used illegally or causing anti-social problems in the Harlescott area of Shrewsbury.

Police get tough an anti social scooter riders in Harlescott

A series of incidents involving youths on scooters have been reported in recent weeks. Most have been in Kynaston Road area and near the community centre late at night from around 10.30pm to 1.30am.

The Local Policing Team has already seized one scooter and warned it is adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards offenders.

Police Constable Andy Hawkins, the Local Policing Officer for Harlescott Grange, said: "Young people gathering on scooters late at night into the early hours are causing a lot of distress for people trying to sleep. It in inconsiderate and anti-social.

"They are also causing problems on Battlefield industrial estate and on the surrounding fields."

He said that on Tuesday morning this week, a 50cc blue scooter was seen being ridden across the public footpath in the centre of Kynaston Road play area from the direction of York Road.

"Neither the rider or the passenger were wearing helmets. One was an adult and the other a juvenile and they have been reported for a number of driving offences. They also had no documents for the scooter.

"Numerous complaints have been received about similar incidents and anti-social behaviour involving scooters is a current PACT (Partners and Communities Together) priority. Zero-tolerance will be adopted for those using scooters in an anti-social manner without documents and bikes will be seized."

PC Hawkins added: "The Local Policing Team will be targeting abuse and checking local riders to see they have the correct documents and are riding in accordance with their licences."
