Two rescued from fire at block of flats in Wellington

Shropshire Fire & Rescue control room received a call at 12.25am from an occupier of a flat on Regents Street in Wellington to report a rubbish fire outside the property.

Upon arrival the crews discovered a fire involving the external staircase of the flats which had spread to ground and first floor flats within the large detached block of flats. Within seconds the officer in charge was made aware that two occupants were still unaccounted for.

A further 2 appliances from Wellington and Telford were mobilised alongside an Incident Command Officer escalating the incident to a “persons reported fire”.

The prompt action by the crew of the Wellington appliance meant firefighters who entered the building wearing breathing apparatus were able to rescue two occupants from the first floor flat. Both men were taken to hospital via ambulance.

A Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said "Early indications are that there were no working smoke alarms within the properties. We reiterate the importance of working smoke alarms."

A joint Investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire by Fire Investigation Officers and the Police.
